Somatic experiencing physiologically reduces stress and anxiety, alters the autonomic nervous system, and releases trauma. Just as there are multiple modalities of cognitive therapy, there are also multiple approaches to somatic therapies. Somatic Experiencing is a bottom-up approach; its main goal is not to help explore memories or emotions associated with a traumatic event, but to uncover bodily feelings.
